Stacey & Drew: Eisenhower House Wedding, Newport, RI

StaceyDrew101609-0752-0002

Stacey contacted us by phone last year FULL of excitement and enthusiasm about our photography, her wedding, her fiance and seemingly everything in between.  We quickly setup a time to meet, and when she and Drew arrived at our studio I could see that their energy was boundless.  They simply popped out of their car smiling and laughing even though they had driven just 2 hours from Boston.

I remember noticing a few things right away: the first was Drew’s towering six foot nine inch height and the second was watching how quickly these two reached for each other’s hands, how close they sat on our big couch and finally how effortlessly they finished each other’s sentences.  It was if they had known one another their whole lives.

When we arrived at Stacey’s Newport, Rhode Island hotel room the weather was pretty awful, and I was worried that Stacey may be concerned about it.  There was a full gail blowing, it was raining and there was a raw cold in the air that’s typically reserved for winter.  I knew Stacey was a rough and tumble fellow Bowdoin alum (Go U Bears!), but even so, the weather was pretty nasty and she was allowed to freak out on her wedding day.  But when I opened the door and saw Stacey’s same big smile, and heard her first joke about the weather, I knew we were going to have a great time regardless of the storms outside.

StaceyDrew101609-0032-0006

It also didn’t take us long to learn that our very first observations had been correct: Stacey and Drew’s relationship is FILLED with laughter, inside jokes and a connection that’s as obvious as it is strong.  Drew calls Stacey “Ace” and had sent a dozen roses to her room that morning along with the above note written on an Ace of Hearts card.  Creative!

StaceyDrew101609-0072-0001

Stacey and Drew also get an award for being the first of our clients to give out personalized beer coozies at their snazzy Newport wedding.  Good to know that they have their priorities straight… hysterical!

StaceyDrew101609-0102-0004

Though the rain had stopped, the wind and cold was impressive.  We had arranged to do a few formal shots in front of the (warm) lobby fireplace, but Stacey came down and spotted another bride who was getting ready at the hotel having photos outside.  Not to be outdone she quickly marshaled her family/bridesmaids and charged outside.  It was FREEZING and incredibly windy.  But it was hilarious and she was unstoppable.

Stacey arrives at St. Lucy’s Church in Middletown, RI with her dad beside her.

Stacey’s grandmother spots her for the first time.  I think the enthusiasm is hereditary!

StaceyDrew101609-0439-0010

Drew’s eyes fill with tears as he listens to a reading.

StaceyDrew101609-0375-0011

Drew leans down to put Stacey’s ring on her finger.

StaceyDrew101609-0409-0015

The kiss!

StaceyDrew101609-0400-0014

Immediately after their kiss they just looked at each other and began giggling.  Classic Drew & Stacey!

StaceyDrew101609-0459-0016

Stacey and Drew had each written a letter to each other and saved them to be read aloud for the first time during the ceremony.  Not a dry eye in the church.

StaceyDrew101609-0463-0017

Stacey’s bridesmaids react to Drew’s letter being read.

StaceyDrew101609-0485-0018

Finally married, Drew & Stacey pile into the back of their Bentley and are whisked off to the reception.

StaceyDrew101609-0585-0019

And what a reception it was!  Despite the wind and cold, they had an amazing, warm, colorful tent setup on the lawn of The Eisenhower House in Fort Adams State Park.

StaceyDrew101609-0614-0020

Drew struts his stuff during the first dance.

StaceyDrew101609-0629-0022

The bridesmaids surround Stacey’s dad as Drew dips his bride.

StaceyDrew101609-0771-0024

One of the most tender moments of the night was Drew leaning down to hug his mom after their dance together.  It’s such a genuine, gentle, loving image.

StaceyDrew101609-0792-0025

Ok, enough of the sentimental stuff… these guys know how to party!

StaceyDrew101609-0857-0026

Stacey getting low.

StaceyDrew101609-0872-0027

Getting lower.

StaceyDrew101609-0893-0028

Rocking the beer coozy.  Nothing says “elegant, Newport fancy wedding” like a gold beer coozy.

StaceyDrew101609-0898-0029

Then the sunglasses came out.

StaceyDrew101609-0933-0030

Then the mustaches came out (of course!?)  Apparently groomsmen ’staches are a tradition amongst Drew’s friends and they hooked Stacey up with a mustache that would put Tom Selleck’s to shame.

StaceyDrew101609-0937-0032

Classic look on Drew’s face as he reacts to his first kiss from his beautiful bride and her new ’stache.

StaceyDrew101609-0830-0033

Then the lifts, spins and hernias!

StaceyDrew101609-0967-0035

Amidst all the craziness, all the props, all the dancing, all the horrible weather and the 200+ people… in the center of it all, there were Stacey and Drew lost in each other’s arms.  Never far from each other, they were still laughing and still hugging like they were on the very first day I met them.

What an honor it was to be there to support you both and to document your celebration amongst family and friends!  Thanks for being so welcoming!  We had a blast at your wedding and hope you’re having fun on your honeymoon in Australia!

Caroline & Stuart: New York Yacht Club Wedding, Newport RI

CarolineStuart10309-0419-0001

When Caroline and Stuart contacted me to shoot their New York Yacht Club wedding in Newport, Rhode Island, I was happy to learn that we had a few things in common.  They are competitive sailors in the J/105 fleet in The Bay Area living right near our San Francisco, California studio and I, as a self described boat geek (I hold a 100 ton Captain’s license and went to wooden boatbuilding school in Newport), always love photographing at Harbor Court any chance we get.  I knew pretty quickly that I would thoroughly enjoy them and their wedding celebration at The NYYC!

CarolineStuart10309-0319-0007

What I didn’t know then, was that Stuart was an Aussie who had also been a member of The Royal Perth Yacht Club!  To those that haven’t been involved with yacht racing, that may mean nothing… but it’s the equivalent of a New York Yankee getting married in Fenway Park.  You see, the New York Yacht Club dominated the America’s Cup racing scene for 132 years, until 1983, when in Newport, Rhode Island… Australia II sailed into town and stole the Cup from under our nose.  It’s one of the great stories of sport (read more about The America’s Cup here), & a moment in history that I remember like it was yesterday.

CarolineStuart10309-0637-0021

Stuart and Caroline’s wedding was everything we could hope for: filled with thoughtful details, beautiful moments and most of all, two people who truly love and enjoy one another.  The one exception was that once again, the weather gods decided to test us (see the NYYC Blizzard Wedding here), but like all great sailors, the wedding party was up to the challenge.

CarolineStuart10309-0606-0020

Stuart’s toast came with a bit of a surprise… he confessed that he had walked down the aisle carrying the boxing Kangaroo flag… a replica of the one flown by Australia II when they took the America’s Cup in 1983!

When the band played a song by Michael Jackson, this woman took advantage of the gentlemen’s white gloved formal dress wear , and did her own impersonation!  Nice work!

Wedding Photojournalist Association: Honors Us Again!

The good folks over at the prestigious Wedding Photojournalist Association (WPJA) have always maintained some of the highest professional standards in the industry.  They are one of the very best photojournalist organizations out there, and to be accepted by them to become a member, you really have to be at the very top of your game.

We’re always honored to be a part of such a great group of photographers who are innovative leaders in their field, and we’re consistently impressed by the work of our fellow members.  We rarely enter contests, so when we were encouraged by the WPJA to get involved, we grabbed two images from a single recent wedding… and tossed our hat in the ring.  Why not?
picture-4
We were thrilled to hear such positive feedback from the WPJA about our work… and honored to learn that BOTH our images had won!  With stiff international competition from some of the best photojournalists out there, we never expected to do so well.  The prize winning images were from Caroline & Mark’s wedding in Newport, Rhode Island.  The blog post of that wedding is here.
wpja-3
Are we hooked on contests?  No.  Not at all… we’ve got too many stories to capture and too many wonderful clients that deserve our focused attention.  Though we won’t become contest junkies, it’s nice to occasionally put our work out there “head to head” amongst the best wedding photojournalists in the world and receive such accolades!
The WPJA also honored us by using our previously prize winning image of the boy with a lobster claw stuck on his nose as their cover page.  It’s been a great week, and congratulations to all the winning photographers!  To view all the contest winners, just visit the Wedding Photojournalist website at www.wpja.com

Caroline & Mark: New York Yacht Club Wedding, Newport, RI

A wedding ceremony at the church where John F. Kennedy was married and a reception at The New York Yacht Club (NYYC) in Newport, Rhode Island instantly conjures up impressions of refined, old New England elegance, tradition and beauty.

Brian Wedge Photography

Add a raging blizzard that shuts down most of the Eastern Seaboard to that quaint image, along with the boundless energy of Caroline and Mark… and you get a truly unique, once in a lifetime, storybook wedding that retains all the grace of traditional Newport… and all the fun of an incredible party with a hundred of your favorite snowbound friends and family.

Engagement ring on her right hand, Caroline & Mark instinctually reach out to hold hands during the mass.

Caroline and Mark were featured on our blog last April (link here) when I flew down to Washington DC for a photo shoot amongst the cherry blossoms.  I instantly liked spending time with them, and as I reported upon return, their infectious enthusiasm turned a two hour long engagement photo shoot into a 6+ hour walking tour of DC.  Most of the time was spent laughing, having fun and getting them some amazing photographs almost effortlessly.

Just gorgeous…

Caroline’s Dad sees her for the first time as she wipes away a tear upon seeing him.

Her dad practices lifting her veil… you can sense the emotion in the room as they are just moments from leaving for the ceremony.

Caroline and Mark’s winter wedding was everything they dreamed of.  They were EXCITED about the blizzard, and they weren’t daunted for a moment by the cold, the wet or the logistical difficulties of the day.  One of my favorite moments was watching Caroline tip toe through 6 inches of slushy frozen snow in clean white shoes, strapless wedding gown, bouquet in hand and leaning into a 30 knot sub zero arctic breeze… with a GIANT smile on her face.  She saw me photographing her and just looked up and started laughing.

The sparkler departure.

The absolute key to a winter wedding (and any wedding) in my opinion, is to have fun with whatever the weather or circumstances bring to you.  If it’s a blizzard, a power outage or a rain storm… the most important element is how you embrace it.  Mark & Caroline’s wedding was freezing cold, had at times blinding snow, required constant use of 4 wheel drive and it honestly didn’t hamper the party one bit.

Caroline and Mark never lost sight of the fact that they were there to celebrate, to have fun and to enjoy their friends and family.  We were so impressed by how gracious and welcoming everyone was… and felt lucky to help document the beauty of their wedding!  THANK YOU FOR HAVING US!!!
